The chat client of choice to use with the LordHome chat service is Element. Element focuses on the most commonly requested chat features. This includes text chat, audio & video chat, and file sharing. It supports full encryption of all communications and federated chat across multiple Matrix servers. Its functionality can be extended with plugins.

Element is avaible for desktop computers and most mobile devices. Not all device platforms are born equally, so be aware that the Element app might be a little different on some platforms. Element is not supported on Windows phones.

The LordHome chat service is based on the Matrix protocol. The Matrix protocol abstracts communication types into a common protocol wrapper, which can be fully encrypted. This allows the Matrix protocol to support many different types of real-time communications. This includes text chat, audio chat, video chat, file sharing, and really anything else that can be wrapped into its abstracted communications system. Some chat clients support specialty communication types such as encrypted chat, desktop sharing, and chat protocol bridging.

Matrix is a federated chat service. This means you are not locked into only talking with people on a specific chat server. In addition to chatting with people on your home server, you can chat with anyone who has an account on a Matrix compatible chat server. You can also chat with people using other chat services if you set up protocol bridging. For security, the federation service has been restricted on the LordHome chat service to only approved servers.

The Matrix protocol doesn't really care which client app you use. Because of this, there are several different chat clients available that do a variety of different things. However, there are some chat client apps, such as Element, that primarily focus on the most commonly requested chat features.
